TRANS-PACIFIC KAYAK ATTEMPT ABORTED

A young French-born American Cyril Derreumaux called off his attempt to paddle the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Hawaii after battling high winds and seas and losing his sea anchor. He was 70 miles from shore when he called the Coast Guard for rescue after consulting with his crew, before conditions deteriorated further.

THE SOUTHERN ICEFIELDS OF PATAGONIA
    by Greg Paquin

"Hold on to the truck door, or the wind will rip the door off!" Some of the first English words spoken after the initial greetings by our soon to be very gracious expedition trainee host. We found ourselves in the furious fifties, -54 latitude, South America, Tierra del Fuego, Chile. A journey to the end of the Americas to explore the Southern Ice Fields of Patagonia, mentor a top Chilean paddle coach, and provide expeditionary training for a young local expedition company.

Stellar Comes Out to Play
    by Tamsin Venn

Emerging from our Covid caves as vaccinated summer sets in, many are ready to update their kayak choice. Such was the case on a June 5 demo day for the beautifully crafted fiberglass Stellar kayaks at Newburyport Canoe & Kayak just south of Newburyport, Mass.

It's never an easy choice. As someone once said, a kayak is a compromise. it's never going to be absolutely perfect for you.

Book Review: The Narrow Edge: A Tiny Bird, An Ancient Crab & An Epic Journey
    Reviewed by Tamsin Venn

The Red Knot (Calidris canutus rufa), a little red sandpiper, is one of the longest distance bird migrators, flying 9,300 miles from the tip of South America in Tierra del Fuego to the tundra in the central Canadian Arctic.

CATCH OF A LIFETIME: Anglers Hook Rare Sturgeon in Potomac
    by Karl Blankenship

Early one April afternoon under a bright blue spring sky, Josh Cohn and Connor Lynch were bouncing a fishing jig off the bottom of the Potomac River thinking they might catch a sucker or quillback carp.

Lynch felt the line tug, and Cohn pulled the fish to the surface.

"It's a sturgeon!" Lynch said.

"The hell it is," Cohn replied.

But Lynch was right.

A Totally "Awksome" Trip
    by Tamsin Venn

Dick Wheeler paddled 1,500 miles in 122 days in the summer and fall of 1991. He started July 13 from Funk Island off the east coast of Newfoundland and came to land permanently Nov. 16 in Wareham, Mass. His coastal voyage followed the migratory path of the flightless Great Auk, whose webfoot-powered journey led every year from nesting areas on Funk to wintering grounds in Buzzards Bay and points south.

For The Beginner…

In 1992, there were more paddlers beginning their adventures than experts. ACK has run many stories with advice for newbie paddlers over the years, starting with this series.

Q: I am confused by the differences between plastic and fiberglass or Kevlar kayaks.
A: Probably the most important difference is price. "Plastic" kayaks are made in molds that are         heated and spun, sending material to each spot on the hull where it hardens.

Safety At Sea
    by Wallace Stevens

You are paddling offshore, visiting islands on the Maine lsland Trail or the Maryland-Virginia barrier islands. You are out of immediate contact with the usual emergency services. In case of an accident, you can't pick up a phone and call 911. You might fire off a flare, but in some areas there are so few boats that chances are remote that your signal would be seen. So at least for a while you are on your own. The best defense is anticipation.

Exploring North Carolina's Barrier Islands
    by Chris Conklin

The night before we had camped mid-way along the sound side of Shackleford Bank. In the darkness the lights of Harkers Island lay to the north across Back Sound. The morning dawned calm, sunny, and gloriously bright, a fine October day. Our morning's destination was four and a half miles to the west end of the island. Our group of six paddlers was experienced, so getting underway involved little fuss and was a practiced routine. The tide was high and outgoing so we set a leisuraly pace a hundred yards offshore. This was new country so my interest was keen. and I was not to be disappointed.

The Quiet Coastline
    by Tamsin Venn

Quietude is Cobscook Bay's great attribute. Sit still and listen. No cars, no boat engines, no voices — only the sound of the wind in the trees and the birds, maybe a loon's gurgle, and no sense of imminent intrusion. You feel like you've dropped off the edge of the coastal waterfront into paradise. And indeed you have.

Wye Island, Eastern Shore, Maryland
    by Bob and Pat Kent

We are driving south from Chesterton, Md., our base for a three-day paddle to the Wye River where we will begin or paddling season for 1996. It is early a.m. on a perfect day in early May. We are familiar with the way since this is our second visit to Wye. Our first visit in September, 1994, was a big disappointment as we were forced back because of high winds.
